How the planner works

What the planner calculates

The route is calculated for the vehicle chosen: gross weight, height, width, length and axle count, and the tunnel category for ADR goods. A plan has 2 to 10 points, with a loading, unloading or other stop at each point in between, and is planned forward from a departure time or backwards from an arrival appointment. The result shows the distance, driving time, total time, the arrival time in the local time of the destination, the countries crossed, estimated tolls, ferry crossings and a timeline of every drive, break, rest, stop and crossing. A safety margin of 0, 5, 10 or 15 % is added to driving times, 10 % by default.

Breaks (Art. 7)

After 4 h 30 min of driving the planner inserts a 45-minute break. A stop marked Other (no work) of 45 minutes or more counts as that break; one of 15 minutes or more counts as the first part of a split break, and the second part is then 30 minutes. Loading and unloading are other work and do not count as a break. A ferry crossing of 45 minutes or more also counts as a break.

Daily driving and daily rest (Art. 6 and 8)

A day allows 9 hours of driving. The planner uses a 10-hour day, at most twice a week, only when the extra hour saves a later daily rest. The daily rest has to end within 24 hours of the start of the shift. The planner takes a reduced daily rest of 9 hours while one of the three allowed between two weekly rests is left, and a regular daily rest of 11 hours after that.

Weekly driving and weekly rest (Art. 6 and 8)

Driving is capped at 56 hours in a calendar week and 90 hours in two consecutive weeks. A weekly rest starts no later than six 24-hour periods after the end of the previous one, or earlier when a cap is reached; a rest forced by a cap lasts until the new week starts on Monday at 00:00. The planner takes a reduced weekly rest of 24 hours when the previous one was regular, and a regular weekly rest of 45 hours when the previous one was reduced. In international transport two reduced weekly rests in a row are allowed; the route counts as international when it leaves the country of establishment, or crosses a border when no country is set. A reduced weekly rest comes with a warning about the hours to compensate, and a regular weekly rest on the route with a warning that it cannot be taken in the vehicle.

Two drivers (Art. 8(5))

With two drivers the planner assumes they share the driving equally. The daily, weekly and two-week driving limits apply to each driver, so the truck may be driven twice as long as with one driver, and the driving figures entered under Current state are per driver. The daily rest is 9 hours and has to end within 30 hours of the start of the shift. No separate breaks are added, because one driver can take the break while the other drives.

Tolls

Tolls are estimates for the vehicle and the route, added up per currency without conversion. Where a toll has several fares, the planner takes the transponder fare, then the cash or card fare; fares sold only as a pass or subscription are left out, because they are not the cost of one trip. A warning appears when a toll on the route requires a transponder. With toll roads ticked under Avoid, the planner looks for a route without them, and the route comes with a warning when they could not all be avoided.

Ferries (Art. 9)

Ferry crossings on the route appear in the timeline with their crossing time, which is not counted as driving time and gets no safety margin. When a crossing lasts at least one hour, and the driver has already driven 8 hours that day or the crossing is as long as the daily rest, the planner places the daily rest on board. If that rest continues ashore after the crossing, it is a regular daily rest of 11 hours, because a reduced daily rest may not be interrupted. With ferries ticked under Avoid, the planner looks for a route without them.

Restrictions and warnings

When the route breaks a vehicle restriction, a time-dependent restriction, a seasonal closure or a blocked road, the planner shows it as a warning next to the plan. Warnings also appear when the route leaves the EU, the EEA and Switzerland, where national rules may differ, and when an arrival appointment cannot be met legally: the plan then starts now and shows the earliest legal arrival.

What the plan does not cover

Breaks and rests are marked on the map where they fall due along the route; the planner does not search for truck parking or rest areas. It applies Regulation (EC) 561/2006 only: national rules, the AETR agreement and the working-time limits of Directive 2002/15/EC are not checked. A driver may rest longer than planned, and the plan does not replace the tachograph record.
